At the University of Washington School of Music, we are committed to studying and performing the greatest music of all time and to pioneering new directions in creating the music of today.
We are collaborative, working in partnership with individuals, groups, and organizations to advance artistic excellence in our region and in our world. We are leaders and innovators, improvisers and inventors, composers and scholars, curators of the musical past, engineers of the present and future.
At the UW School of Music we explore a diverse anthology of musical opportunities. Our work in scholarship and performance advances and broadens the educational mission of this outstanding public university. We share with our students, our audiences and our communities the enriching properties that are the hallmark of all great art. We do this in the way we know best—by making and enjoying great music.

From the Director

The School of Music is a vital part of the artistic and scholarly life of the University of Washington and plays a prominent role in the Seattle and greater Pacific Northwest music and art communities. With well over 100 concerts each year of music spanning more than a millennium of time and extending across the cultural globe, with daily seminars and lectures covering the same spans of time and place, the School of Music and its faculty and students are central to fabric of the University.
The School's mission is multifaceted, represented by faculty and students from all walks of life and from many different genres of performance, composition, and scholarship. We are, however, unified by our abiding belief in the universal power of musical experience and a steadfast passion for conveying all that is musical to each of our students, be they music majors or current and future members of the audience.
Our mission is a continuum from the curatorial preservation of music already in existence to the creation of the most experimental new music. This continuum is in evidence through performances by our faculty and students in venues around the world, through the research discoveries that are published in major books and articles, and in the highly esteemed recordings of music played by our performers and created by our composers.
As you navigate around our web site, you’ll see many examples of the above. Take a look at our concert calendar, our faculty biographies, and the activities of our current students. You’ll find a School emanating a deep enthusiasm for music, for learning, and for service world-wide.

History

Making music since 1862
Music has been a significant element of a well-rounded education at the University of Washington since its very beginning more than 150 years ago. Piano instruction was first offered at the territorial university in 1862, just one year after its founding, and lessons in violin, pipe organ, and singing soon followed. Students have been performing in the orchestra at UW since 1898 and earning bachelor of music degrees since 1911.
A century of musical excellence
More than one hundred years since the University first began conferring music degrees, we remain steadfast in our commitment to offering students—and the people of Washington state and beyond—opportunities to explore and share a remarkably diverse array of musical traditions, styles, and experiences. Our students are part of a long history of musical excellence. They also are active participants in creating the latest chapters of that rich history.

Piano and voice recitals are held twice a year. Participation is encouraged but not required. Student concerts are also held throughout the year at festivals, fairs, rock clubs, charity functions, malls, and numerous other venues and events.  Rock bands, Glee, solosits, and duos perform regularly throughout the year.

Our bookstore specializes in music for beginning and intermediate students as well as the newest titles from Hal Leonard and Alfred Publishing.  Vocalists will find all the top pop and Broadway music scores, as well as audition and performance pieces.  Our digitial retailer allows students to instantly download selections and print them at the school.

Our School
With 12 private instruction rooms,  Music University offers lessons on nearly every instrument, including voice, guitar, bass, drums, piano, horns, woodwinds, and strings.  The atmosphere at Music University is comfortable and inviting.

The school is a professional place where everyone knows one another and all who enter are made to feel like a welcome part of the family.  Each piano instruction room has a grand piano for students to learn on.  The spacious drum rooms have top of the line Sonar drum sets, and every guitar room has modern amps.
Faculty and Students
The experienced Music University faculty are also working musicians who perform regularly and have attended prestigious music schools such as Juilliard, Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Westminster Choir College, among others.

Many of our students have performed in competition at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Philadelphia's Kimmel Center. Vocal students have sung the national anthem at Madison Square Garden, Giants Stadium, Newark's Prudential Center, Red Bulls Arena, the NJ Golden Gloves Championships, and numerous other stadiums.  They have also been contestants on American Idol, The Voice, and America's Got Talent.

Our rock bands have performed at Bamboozle, Warped Tour, Six Flags, and Skate and Surf Festival, as well as sharing the stage with popular bands like Big Time Rush, Jacob Whitesides, and Jake Miller.    They perform regularly at local clubs including The Stone Pony, Starland Ballroom, The Bitter End, as well as numerous state and local fairs
